From Porto to Lisbon: get to know the most beautiful Portuguese cities

It's about two hundred miles of travel, but you don't have to do them all.

You will be able to choose two or three cities from a list of eight: Aveiro, Coimbra, Fátima, Tomar, Alcobaça, Batalha, Nazaré and Peniche.

Aveiro

If you choose Aveiro, you will see the region's famous canals.

Known as “the Venice of Portugal”, it was a fishing village which feels more like a balcony with a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean.

The colorful boats – known as “moliceiros” – will invite you to embark on a journey through the city's historical heritage.

Coimbra

If you prefer to stop in Coimbra, don't miss the University, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Europe, known for its Baroque library, the Joanina.

In this city of students, you can also pass by the Old Cathedral, the monastery and the church of Santa Cruz, without forgetting the Penedo da Saudade.

Fatima

Visiting Fatima will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience.
Known as the “Altar of the World”, the city has one of the world's leading Marian cult shrines and is the destination of millions of pilgrims every year.

Tomar

The Old Bridge is one of the most beautiful sights in the city of Tomar.

After crossing it, head to the Pegões Aqueduct, just over 1.2 km from the Convent of Christ. This Philippine aqueduct is about 6 km long and more than 500 years old, and was the main water supply to the Convent.

Alcobaça

If you prefer a little more history, then visit Alcobaça, with its imposing monastery and the tombs of Pedro and Inês de Castro. Of course, you can’t leave the city without seeing the Bay of S. Martinho do Porto and Polvoeira Beach.

Around 30 kilometres from Alcobaça is a UNESCO Heritage Site: The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória.

Nazaré

Near these cities is Nazaré, a land of surfers and giant waves. If you want to breathe the sea air, this is the perfect city!

Peniche

Last but not least, we have Peniche. It is one of the largest traditional fishing ports in the country, famous for its bilros lace.

And what do you eat?

Here are some suggestions:

You can stop at Mealhada, in Aveiro, to taste the famous roasted piglet.

There are other options, such as chanfana, goat or lamb.

If you prefer fish or seafood, Nazaré and Peniche are undoubtedly for you. Have your choice of stew, seafood rice or sardines baked in charcoal.

You won’t leave hungry.
