Serra da Estrela — Private Journey to Mainland Portugal’s Highest Peak
Travel privately from Porto to Serra da Estrela, mainland Portugal’s highest mountain range. Visit Celorico da Beira, Seia and Sabugueiro, reach the Serra da Estrela Tower (1,993 m) and enjoy striking mountain landscapes.
Serra da Estrela rises gradually from Portugal’s interior, a granite mountain landscape shaped by glaciers, altitude and centuries of pastoral life. Light shifts quickly here, silence becomes part of the experience, and mountain villages emerge as natural extensions of the terrain.
This private Serra da Estrela tour explores mainland Portugal’s highest mountain rangewith time, comfort and perspective. Travelling in a premium vehicle with an expert local guide, the route reveals Serra da Estrela through historic settlements, regional gastronomy and high-altitude panoramas.
Leaving Porto, the journey unfolds towards the Beira Interior region. The first stop is Celorico da Beira, long associated with the production of Serra da Estrela cheese. At the Solar do Queijo, the cultural and historical importance of this protected product is explained through its traditional methods, materials and deep connection to the land.
The ascent continues through Seia, one of the main gateways to Serra da Estrela, before reaching Sabugueiro, the highest village in Portugal. Granite houses, seasonal rhythms and mountain life remain closely tied to altitude. This setting offers a natural pause in the day, with the option to enjoy traditional regional cuisine (optional).
Higher still, the route reaches Lagoa Comprida, the largest mountain lake in Serra da Estrela, before arriving at the Serra da Estrela Tower, standing at 1,993 metres, the highest point in mainland Portugal. From here, panoramic mountain views extend across glacial valleys and open plateaus, with the possibility of snow during winter months.
Nearby, the Lady of Good Star sculpture adds a symbolic and spiritual presence to the landscape. The return journey to Porto is calm and scenic, shaped by altitude, tradition and the quiet strength of the mountain.
To further personalise the experience, a selection of optional experiences may be added. These allow each group to shape the day according to individual interests and preferred pace, without altering the natural rhythm of the journey.
